Contemporary rurality in the dead sea region of Jordan.
AD farmhouse is located on a secluded road on the South Shuna district near the dead sea of Jordan. The client’s brief was to design a farmhouse that accommodates a large central building for private events and four attached chalets for their children.
We envisioned a typological identity to be odd to its surroundings, and to be anchored as a massive primitive object compared to its context. Issues of natural lighting, view outlook, privacy from/for neighbors are of extreme importance to the client.
Tall and monolithic, the farmhouse is designed entirely out of concrete; chosen for its durability, low maintenance, and ability to evoke a sense of permanence within the natural environment. The limited palette of materials reveals the simple geometry of the building and creates a visual and tactile continuity between landscape and architecture.
The elements and details are [not] of typical and traditional architecture. The usage of breezeblocks, a large concrete canopy at the entrance, and squared columns balanced along the building reflects its uncommon massiveness and its ambiguous aesthetic.
